“Quarantine Barrels”. Original 12″x 36″ acrylic painting on canvas by Bart Saric.

Inspired by two separate events, locally experienced by artist Bart Saric, this painting depicts a lot at once altogether. His starting process for the work was from a ‘Sharpie’ sketch. The scene was created while reminiscing about surfing the ‘Venice Breakwater’ during the ‘L.A. Riots’, which were ignited by the Rodney King trial verdict. As Mr. Saric recalls, ” … it was a surreal moment to be escorted to the beach by military personnel to surf. The waves were firing, as was our city of Los Angeles. Mother oceans therapy was an immediate need of mine and I acted upon the deeper calling and meaning amongst the chaos around us. Fortunately, I was able to surf during that specific time as a spiritual aid.”

The second inspiration comes from night surfing. Usually done under a full moon, or red tide. This painted moment is a hybrid of both these situations put into one. With a notch added in, to intensify the conditions with presence of ‘Po’-Po’ (police) on the rocks brandishing heavy artillery, and a ‘ghetto bird’ (police helicopter) hovering above while lighting up the breakwater area. Critical, crucial, and cunning. A fierce aquatic scene beach side, emanating phosphorous water hues from the changing shallow low tide and rising moon. As well as, moody warm and cold color’s associated with the city, beach and land areas that lurk in a evening vibe. Not only is this a cultural action piece, the under tones and hints of its political presence are undeniable from origins mixed into a background city scene.
